The village of Fiborn Quarry existed between 1905 and 1936, when the quarry closed. Remnants include a number of foundations. Historical records of the village and quarry operations, and early descriptions of the caves, have been partially collected by the MKC in its ongoing Fiborn History Project.

Fiborn Quarry Preserve is of interest to naturalists as well as geologists because it has unmined areas where you can see sinkholes and caves and the unique habitats they provide for plants and animals.

A narrow band of nearly pure limestone, within a larger mass of less pure rock of the Niagara Escarpment, outcrops here. Situated between wetland areas to the south and the Hendrie River to the north is a place where time, mankind, and nature have left a unique imprint. 2016-05-19 They originally planned to resell the land but in 1904 they opened their own quarry, which was incorporated in 1905 as Fiborn Quarry, a portmanteau of their names. Fiborn Quarry was accompanied by a village that had a post office and a company store with the only telephone in town. The school in Fiborn opened in 1907 and served an average of twenty students a year through the seventh grade. Hidden in the woods in the central-eastern Upper Peninsula not far from Trout Lake are the remnants of the old Fiborn Quarry. The Fiborn Limestone Co. at its peak had two locomotives and a small town of 75 people that worked for the quarry. It operated until the 1930s when the depression crippled the company’s ability to operate.

Fiborn Quarry was a small town built at a limestone quarry northwest of St. Ignace in 1904, and was completely deserted by 1940.
